GridUnity CEO Brian Fitzsimons an Invited Speaker at US DoE Interconnection Innovation eXchange (i2X) Launch Event

On June 7, GridUnity CEO Brian Fitzsimons will be an invited speaker at the launch of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE)’s new Interconnection Innovation eXchange (i2X). He will speak on the Data Collection and Strategic Roadmap panel, moderated by Tom McDermott, a Chief Engineer and Solar Sub-sector Lead at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Other speakers at the event will include Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and speakers from the DoE Solar Energy Technologies Office, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, among others.

According to the May 31, 2022 DoE press release,

“Eliminating the gridlock that’s slowing down clean energy deployment is critical to increasing access to cheaper electricity for American families and businesses,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Funding in the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will help DOE and our National Labs build a coalition of problem solvers to tackle interconnection issues, ensure grid reliability and develop equitable solutions for all communities.”

The I2X initiative represents an important step forward toward grid modernization and reducing barriers to renewable energy interconnection.

MISO deploys GridUnity platform to streamline electric generation interconnection

Online self-serve application tool will simplify and accelerate the interconnection process for customers

BOSTON, MA – June 1, 2020 – GridUnity announced today that the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) has rolled out the company’s cloud-based new generation interconnection queue application tool to simplify and streamline the process for its power generators. MISO provides transmission service and oversight for a region which stretches from Louisiana to Michigan, Minnesota and Manitoba. The ISO/RTO serves 42 million Americans located primarily in the Midwest and Southern U.S.

GridUnity’s platform was selected to simplify and accelerate the process of adding new generation resources to the grid including both traditional and renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and energy storage. Interconnection customers of large-scale energy projects must complete the application process to qualify and build their projects in MISO’s service area. MISO members include transmission owners, competitive transmission developers, independent power producers, and municipal and investor-owned utilities.

Solar Alliance Seeks to Revolutionize “Going Solar” Experience

 

The Northern and Central California SunShot Alliance today announced plans to construct and interconnect rooftop solar systems in one day or less, an unprecedented goal given the industry’s current average of 30 days. In a contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative, teams made up of local governments, solar and technology companies, and electric utilities will compete for a total of $10 million in cash prizes that will go back into local communities.

The alliance, which includes Pacific Gas and Electric Company, SolarCity, Qado Energy, Accela and the City of Livermore, will compete in the small systems category (1 – 100 kW) for a first-place prize of $3 million and second-place prize of $1 million. The potential winnings would be split between the City of Livermore and possibly other jurisdictions that will use the funds to enhance the solar experience in their communities. The alliance is also eligible for the Change Prize Award of $100,000, which will be used to develop necessary technologies and recruit additional jurisdictions to join the team.

Despite exceptional cost reductions for solar hardware over recent years, the “going solar” experience in many parts of the country can be long and arduous due to inefficient processes and complex administrative obstacles. Sponsored by the SunShot Initiative, the “SunShot Prize: Race to 7-Day Solar” competition aims to spur innovation and improvements in the solar implementation process. Teams will be judged on their ability to improve process certainty and reduce the “permit-to-plug-in” time from the current duration to a swift seven days for small systems.

Members of the Northern and Central California SunShot Alliance have excellent track records in efficient solar installation and software innovation, making the collective group a strong contender for the national prize. PG&E interconnects more than 5,000 rooftop solar systems per month with an average cycle time of less than five days. SolarCity crews are repeatedly able to install rooftop solar systems in less than one day.
